Broome Volunteer Sea Rescue Group now has its own Facebook Page here.
A BIG thank you to Ocean Pearl Boat Builders for constructing the sign and frame for the front of our tractor - it looks great:
Thanks goes to the Broome Volunteer crew Colin Kenworthy (Skipper), Jen Johns, Dave Wilson and Andrew May on a successful fuel transfer to a stricken vessel "Rosa" 20nm from Broome on the night of 14/12. Also assisting was Warren Scale who we kept out of bed on the radio base, and who also provided ground support for the fuel delivery, so thanks to Warren as well.
The rescue boat Redbill II headed out from Entrance Point around 9:30pm and transferred 280 litres of diesel fuel to the Rosa during the night and escorted the Rosa into Broome Port at 5:00am. The crew returned to Rescue HQ at 6:00am to washdown and refuel after a long night.
The vessel Rosa is approx
20metres long, Aluminium hull and ex-crayboat out of Jurien Bay. The
Rosa and a partner vessel the Nakita are heading to the Solomon Islands
via Carnarvon/Broome/Darwin to be used for medical missionary work.
Their partner vessel Nakita had also run out of fuel, approx 40 nautical
miles south west of Broome. Rosa refuelled at 5:00am on the morning of
Wednesday 15/12 and proceeded back to the partner vessel to re-fuel
them. Both vessels returned to Broome for further fuel arriving at
6:00pm on that evening. They stayed in dock at Broome wharf overnight,
re-fuelled and departed early Thursday 16/12 morning for hopefully an
incident free trip to Darwin and onto the Solomon Islands.
The Rosa and crew are pictured below:

Broome Volunteer Sea Rescue was involved various ways in the annual Broome Shinju Matsuri (Festival of the Pearl) in support for the Dragon Boat Racing on Saturday 28th, and the Float Parade on Sunday 29th (click the links for photos).
Colin skippered a Sea Rescue of
the Aniki II, which had lost steerage 8NM from Broome. It was too large
to be towed by Redbill II, and hence required a call to Port Authority
for a tow by the Fitzroy Star (tug).

On these days a number of our members completed their ESS (Elements of Shipboard Safety) training at Broome TAFE: Paul, Steve, Rebecca, Warren, Pete, Andy & John. Some photos of the survival at sea practical session in the Mercure pool are at: http://picasaweb.google.com/BroomeWaters/2009_1128BVSRGESSCourse#
A training exercise was held for
the benefit of some new BVSRG crew members (welcome Kirstin & Scott) and
as a refresher for others - this included the use of a PFD in a man
overboard situation. Photos of this training session are at:

Thank you Jo' for volunteering to get wet :)
On this night we were having a nice quiet Monthly Meeting (with food and drink!) at FESA House when Duty Skipper Colin received a call for assistance from a boat that had run out of fuel near Riddell Beach. Now that shouldn't be too difficult! BUT, without mentioning any names the crew proceeded to bog the Tractor when attempting to launch (requiring a tow out!), and then wrap a line around the prop on the way in. Oh, well - some (not very clear) photos are at: http://picasaweb.google.com/BroomeWaters/2009_0811BVSRGNightRescueOffRiddellBeach#
Ray Eaton kindly agreed to take some posed photos of our boat and its crew for our sponsors Georgiou Group and LotteryWest. These can be viewed at: http://picasaweb.google.com/BroomeWaters/BVSRG21stJune2009
Come along down to the BVSRG Annual General Meeting to see what goes on and talk to the members about our important role in the community.
The DPI (in Napier Terrace) in Broome is acting as a collection point for the disposal of old (i.e. 121.5 MHz) EPIRB's. Just drop them in at their office and they will take care of them.

New Member's
Training Day:
A BBQ breakfast was held at Entrance Point Launching Ramp followed by a
familiarisation and training trip on Redbill II. Whilst having breakfast
an Australian Frigate passed very close on its way into the port.
New Members
& Maintenance Day:
On Sunday we had an early start, albeit with a BBQ breakfast, to give
Redbill II a much needed run with some new members plus some maintenance
to the trailer.

Wet Season Warning:

New Home Base:
BVSRG is close to signing a lease on a block of land out at the Port of
Broome. Once signed we will be in a position to commission a two story
building that will be used for storage of boats and equipment, plus a
first floor radio room. This building will also contain a Galley and
room for social functions. The land and ground plans are illustrated
below.
Annual Award Night and
Presentation Dinner:
On this night we held the inaugural
Annual Award Night and Presentation Dinner.
The dinner was attended by
our volunteers with Paul Kimber (Regional Manager, VMR Services) representing FESA.
Paul
presented the mounted rib from the original Redbill lugger to
Brett Winfield (Redbill II's Bosun) that will be the prime
exhibit in the display to be housed in our future club house at
Broome Port.
